St. Louis Stops Williams Hit Streak

For once, it was the Chicago Cubs picking up the slack for Billy Williams.

The club's "offensive catalyst," as Chicago manager Leo Durocher has frequently called him, went uncharacteristically silent and saw his 22-game hitting streak snapped by the St. Louis Cardinals. Williams was bailed out by the rest of the Cubs, however, who stopped the Cardinals, 4-1.

The 31-year-old left fielder finished the day 0-for-1, and told reporters at the postgame press conference that "everybody did their job but me."

"Not that it was a huge problem -- we still won the game," he said with a grin. "The streak was a good run though. I'll try to start another one tomorrow."

This season, Williams has hit at a .338 clip and produced 19 runs batted in, 8 home runs and 23 runs.

Hitting Streak Still Alive for Williams

The hot bat of Cubs left fielder Billy Williams continues to churn out hit after hit, game after game. His consecutive-game hitting streak now numbers 20 games after he went 2-for-4 in today's 3-1 loss to the Mets at Wrigley Field.

"I'm trying not to think about it much," he said later. "I don't want to mess with whatever zone I'm in."
Billy Williams struck out in the 1st, flied out in the 4th, hit a solo-shot off Tom Seaver in the 7th and singled in the 9th.

Williams is hitting .339 this season with 8 home runs, 19 RBIs and 23 runs scored. He has 43 hits in 127 at-bats.
